NASA Spaceward Bound India

NASA’s Spaceward Bound, an initiative by NASA Ames, offers astrogeologists and astrobiologists the unique chance to work alongside students in remote, Earth-analog environments, conducting field experiments and engaging in scientific discussions with students and educators. The first Spaceward Bound India expedition took place in Ladakh’s high-altitude desert (3000-6000 meters above sea level), a region that closely resembles the Martian landscape. Ladakh’s diverse terrain, featuring permafrost zones, saline and paleolakes, microbial-rich hot springs, and high-altitude glaciers, provides an ideal setting for Mars analog studies.

I was part of this expedition, documenting the scientific work while also leading outreach programs for students and teachers in these remote areas. The experience allowed us to bring hands-on science to Ladakh’s schools and inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts in some of the world’s most isolated communities.
